Hemp is a natural material used for various applications including fibers. As one of the oldest natural materials, this has been produced in the many regions and utilized by the various countries. However, due to the development of cotton industry and synthetic fibers, consumption of hemp has been decreased. In Korea, on the other hand, hemp culture has been maintained because of the geographic, agricultural tradition, and religious background. In Japan, hemp culture has been particularly developed owing to the strong cultural background such as Samurai, Shintoism, and Naturalism as well as geographic and economic characteristics. Many craftworks show the uniqueness of Japanese hemp culture based Shintoistic tradition.
