≪博雅音≫의 輕脣音化문제 ― 경순음화의 조건과 과정 = Problem of Labiodentalization in the Bóyǎyīn: Conditions and Process of Labiodentalization

In this study, we analyzed the phonetic data of ‘Bóyǎyīn’ to examine whether labiodentalization occurred in ‘Bóyǎyīn’. While Wu Bo(2009) argued that labiodentalization had not yet occurred, Ding Feng(1995) claimed that labiodentalization had already occurred, showing a discrepancy among scholars’ opinions.
Karlgren first proposed the condition of labiodentalization called ‘Division Ⅲ + hekou[合口]’. But his insistence has some problems. Chao Yuen Ren(1941), Pan Wu Yun(1983), and Yang Jian Qiao(1996) proposed a new condition of labiodentalization, ‘Medial -i- and a Middle·Back vowel’. However, as there was no accurate data representing the phonetic system of ‘Bóyǎyīn’, Yang Jian Qiao(1996:137) utilized ten Division Ⅲ rhyme, including 東三, 鍾, 微, 虞, 廢, 文, 元, 陽, 尤, 凡to demonstrate the conditions for the emergence of labiodentalization.
In Section 3.1, we analyzed the phonetic data of ‘Bóyǎyīn’. Table 1 showed that the merged of Labial and Bilabial in ‘Bóyǎyīn’ was much less frequent compared to ‘Guǎng yùn’, indicating a high possibility that labiodentalization had already occurred in ‘Bóyǎyīn’.
In Section 3.2, we confirmed the conditions of labiodentalization observed in ‘Bóyǎyīn’. It was found that they almost perfectly matched the conditions for the emergence of labiodentalization described by Yang Jian Qiao(1996:137). This once again proved the high possibility of labiodentalization occurrence in ‘Bóyǎyīn’. In Section 3.3, we analyzed the process of labiodentalization observed in ‘Bóyǎyīn’. Therefore, we argued that the labiodentalization phenomenon in ‘Bóyǎyīn’ had progressed to the labiodental affricate stage. But it was uncertain whether it had passed through the labiodental fricative stage.
