The modern Chinese A跟B一樣(X) construction has the ambiguity of metaphor, comparison, and speculation. In this paper, we discussed the ambiguity of the A跟B一樣(X) construction when A and B are accompanied by noun phrases, and examined its syntactic and semantic characteristics. The syntactic features of A跟B一樣(X) construction are as follows. First, A and B can contain not only noun phrases but also verb phrases. Second, if A can be inferred from the context, it can be omitted regardless of the meaning. Third, when this construction expresses a comparative meaning, the positions of A and B can be exchanged, but when it expresses a metaphorical meaning, the positions of A and B cannot be exchanged. Fourth, X can include verb or adjective phrases, which further explain the similarities or differences between A and B. If X is followed by a metrological adjective, constructions expressing comparison usually have a positive meaning. In contrast, metaphorical constructions are not subject to this restriction. Fifth, the A跟B一樣(X) construction can be converted to a form such as B一樣X的A when expressing a metaphorical meaning, but not when expressing a comparative meaning. Sixth, the A跟B一樣(X) construction can be converted to the form A跟B不一樣when expressing comparison, but not when expressing a metaphor.
The semantic features of A跟B一樣(X) construction are as follows. First, the construction tends to have a comparative meaning when it has homogeneity in terms of the properties and definiteness of A and B. It is likely to have a metaphorical meaning when it has heterogeneity. Second, the stronger the animacy of B, the easier it is to express comparison; and the weaker the animacy, the easier it is to express a metaphor. Third, although B has strong definiteness and animacy, if it has typicality for X, this construction is likely to express a metaphor.
