It was observed in our previous study that ginko extract could attenuate the hearing loss after the injection of salicylate in guinea pigs, however the difficulties of understanding the pharmacokinetics of ginkgo extract is brought forward.
The variability about the effect of ginko extract on the hearing loss caused by salicylate are observed after administration of ginko extract with different schedules.
Changes of auditory brainstem response(ABR) threshold were observed after administration of lysine salicylate(300㎎/㎏,IM) in each group of guinea pig: administration of EGb 761(100㎎/㎏, IP) at one hour before, of at one or two hours after salicylate injection.
There was no effect of EGb 761 on the hearing loss within 2 hours after the injection of salicylate and it was observed the EGb 761 could attenuate the gearing loss after 2 hours following the injecftion of salicylate(p<0.05).
The similar patterns of the effect of EGb 761 on change of ABR threshold caused by salicylate were observed in each group with different schedules in administrating of EGb 761.
It seemed to be that there was no effect of EGb 761 on early some degree of the hearing loss caused by injection of salicylate, however, after the time the hearing loss could be attenuated by EGb 761. And EGb 761 had an effect on the gearing loss caused by salicylate within one hour, and the effect lasted more than 3 hours after administration.
