동물의 권리문제와 불교의 생명윤리 -개체의 고통이란 기준을 중심으로 = The Problem of Animal Rights and the Position of Buddhist Bioethics -centered on the standard of the pain of individual animals

The moral controversies regarding animal rights, which had begun earnestly to be discussed after the publication of Animal Liberation(1975) by Peter Singer, now seems to be concerned with some concrete practical methodology of animal rights beyond its theoretical differences. My essay firstly examines James Rachels` ``moral individualism`` and Richard D. Ryder``s ``painism``, which both principles has been evaluated to deal with the question from the above viewpoint, and then compares these with the ``discriminative relative equality`` of Theravada tradition and the ``indiscriminative absolute equality`` of Zen Buddhism in the relationships between animal and human beings. It is to look back round reflexively our current ethical stance and attitude towards animal welfare/rights which have been ever uncritically accepted. Here we could conclude that our urgent priority is not to continue debating the pure theoretical arguments over animal rights, but to find out the actual ways being able to improve animal`s tragic conditions, as it is, for example; not to eat meat as possible as; not to wear animal skins; not to enjoy oneself any kind of sports abusing animals and hunting; not to use the shampoo and cosmetics including animal ingredients, and further practice our own such resolutions promptly. For I think that overall pains for animal to experience in this world is literally very serious more than we can usually imagine.
