In order to find some criteria in varietal classification, thirty-four cultivated rice varieties were checked up on trichomes of rice grain. The obtained results were as follows ;
1. Trichomes varied in length with their position on the grain: the shortest trichomes were placed at apiculi, medium ones at the basal portion of apiculi, the longest ones at the tip of glume and comparatively shorter ones at middle and basal portion of glume.
2. Thirtr-four varieties were classified in eight groups based on trichome length, distributions and density
3. Newly bred varieties from indica type had comparatively shorter trichomeg, more uniform distributions and higher density than japonica type varicties, and vice versa.
