Gojong(1852-1919) was an emperor of the time when Korea started to change into a modern nation under the pressure of Japanese and Western imperialism. Between the late 19th century and the early 20th century he ruled over Chosŏn, new media such as oil paintings or photographs were introduced while the traditional fine arts continued. Gojong came in contact with such new media earlier than any one else. Accordingly, various portraits of him including traditional portraits, photographs, illustrations, and oil paintings were produced at that time, especially at the period of Daehan Empire(大韓帝國: 1897-1907). Among those portraits, some were drawn by the orders of Gojong himself while others were produced by the orders of Japanese, missionaries, ideologists of enlightenment thought, etc. This paper studies on the significance these new visual media had at the period of changing into modern times and their functions through various portraits of Gojong.
In the Chosŏn Dynasty, the portraits of kings functioned as means of ritual ceremonies commemorating the preceding kings and as symbols of the orthodox royal authority at the same time. Producing the portraits of kings at that time was a kind of event for the royal family. The best painters took charge of the task and king had discussions with ministers in order to make the portraits best. After the royal portraits are completed, they were enshrined in the royal portrait hall, so people couldn't see them at all, unlike China where people could see the emperors' portraits in wood prints or picture albums.
It was not until 1880s when such traditional functions of royal portraits were changed. After forming a good relation with America in 1882, Gojong had a photograph taken for the first time and delivered it to the American diplomatic minister by course of exchanging the portraits of rulers between two countries forming relations. Since then, royal portraits had functioned as symbols of the country. And such changes of their functions were related to introduction of photographs to Korea in 1880, which was a part of Gojong's enlightenment policy to make Chosŏn wealthy and powerful by accepting Western technologies. Though the outbreak of the Reformist (Military) Revolution in 1884 prevented introduction of photography to Korea, the portraits of Gojong gave an opportunity of not only changing the function of royal portraits but also attracting interest in the realistic representation of the portraits.
In 1890s, Gojong's portraits were distributed to the people to stir up national consciousness. After the Sino-Japanese War (1894), King Gojong's image in wood prints, Nisikie, was used as a means to justify Japan's invasion upon Chosŏn in Japan, while domestically, it was also recognized as a symbol of independence, loyalty and patriotism by the ideologists of enlightenment thought of the Independence Association or Christians.
However, at that time, Gojong's photographs were not easy for the people to get at the newspapers or magazines. They could be attained only through Japanese photo studios or foreigners. In addition, the Chosŏn Government tried to prevent the portraits from becoming commercialized recklessly. Since Gojong acceded to an emperor in 1897 (1897-1910), the government had given an emphasis on royal portraits and tried to maintain the sanctity of the portraits for unifying the nation and strengthening the power of the emperor. Gojong asked the Westerners such as Hubert Vos or Joseph de la Neziere, who came to Chosŏn, to draw his portraits of oil painting, paying them a large sum of money. From Gojong's viewpoint, his image in such works was the one of an emperor pursuing a modern nation. On the contrary, it was the portrait of a falling race to the Westerners.
The fact that Emperor Gojong's portraits were produced using various kinds of new media including photographs and oil paintings shows that the introduction of those new media was mainly led by the government. Furthermore, this also shows that the boundary between traditional arts and modern arts was ambiguous in those days. Especially, as Gojong sought to be a despot and ruler of a modern nation in the period of Daehan Empire, the traditional royal portraits was necessary to strengthen in a sense. Photographs and oil paintings served as means to show royal authority of a civilized nation not simply as new technology or media for reproduction. It might be only after 1910 that traditional royal portrait became an old tradition and realism of photographs or oil paintings became a newly dominant visual method. Therefore, Emperor Gojong's portraits are examples showing complex aspects of a transition period, which are different from both traditional arts of the past and visual arts of the modern colonial era after 1910.
