T.S. 엘리엇의 초기시에 나타난 시간관 -기계론적 시간관과 베르그송의 순수지속을 중심으로 = The Concept of Time Presented in T.S. Eliot's Earlier Poems

The whole works of T. S. Eliot are said to be the trace of spiritual anguish for the union with the Absolute. The process of pursuing the union with the Absolute is said to be divided into three stages; the stage of anguish about the union with the Absolute, the stage of pursuing the union with the Absolute and the stage of achieving the union with God. In this thesis, I will show the first stage of Eliot’s anguish and confliction between mechanical time and ‘pure duration’ through the concept of time by Henri Bergson.
The people who ignore the timeless pattern tend to live in the world where ‘life is measured with coffee spoon’. This world is related to ‘the concept of mechanical time’ of Henri Bergson. On the other hand, ‘pure duration’ of Bergson is presented in the form of christ’s image and the lunar synthesis in contrast to previous imagery. So-called, ‘pure duration’ is the form which the succession of our conscious states assumes when our ago lets itself live, when it refrains from separating its present state from its former states.
It is likely that Eliot reveals his ontological and epistemological limit as he loiters along the boundary between mechanical time and ‘pure duration’. However, we can safely say that the failure to overcome the mechanical time is due to Eliot’s limit to unify with the Absolute, rather than to that of Bergsonian philosophy about time. Through the anguish about Eliot’s earlier poems, we can find the vision that Eliot can achieve the union with the Absolute, so called, the timeless world some day, as realized in Four Quartets.
