조선중기 제천지역 사족의 형성 = A study on the formation of the noble class in Jecheon in the mid Chosen dynasty.

In the early Chosun dynasty, the settling esteemed surnames existed in Jecheon, but they didn't secure their position as the settling noble class except the Kims of Chengpung. Though several clan units came in Jecheon owing to incidents like the dethrone of King Danjong and the literati purge, they didn't prosper as the the settling esteemed surname because of their retirement propensity.
In some situations like the Japanese Invasion of 1592 and 1597, some consanguineous clan units played a leading role and the other clan units settled down in the territorial society through the marital and official post relation. Among them the Kims of Chengpung, the Lees of Kyengju, the Yuns of Chilwon, the Kangs of Jinju, and the Kims of Andong grew up to be the new settling esteemed surname. They consolidated their social position in the county through the samasi(Licentiate Examination), munkwa(Erudite examination), mukwa(Military service examination), an official post etc. They also enlarged their voice in county through the Namdang sewon, the Bonggang sewon, a kind of private academies in addition to Hyaggyo(county school).
Because of the bad geographic setting, after the mid chosun dynasty the yangban clan didn't come forward in seccession a large talents and the a successful applicants about the samasi(Licentiate Examination) and munkwa(Erudite examination). Instead of them, the Kims of Andong, the Lees of Jenju, the Kims of Andong, the Jengs of Yeongil, the Kims of yeoian grew up to be the new settling esteemed surname through the marital and official post relation.
