The purpose of this study is to analyze the gender politics in state-initiated marriage regulations during the early Chosun period In doing this we discuss how women``s lives were reorganized in the process of marriage reformation, and bow gender politics in marriage not only , affected women``s status but also produced social hierarchies among women. In patriarchal society, marriage and family institution rdlect gender power relations and are also understood as the core system sustaining them. It is why marriage institution is a critical site in examining women``s status in the past as well as in the present. The early Chosun period is regarded as a period when the ruling class endeavored to reorder social system according to Confucianism through various institutional reformations. In this period, the state tried to reformulate marriage and family rules under the patrilineal principle of the First Legal Son Centrism based on the Chong-pup (family ordering rule) system. Strengthened monogamy, discrimination between legal wives and concubines, limitation of women``s remarriage, and marriage taboo between the families of the same surname were also the tools for establishing the patrilineal family order.`` Strengthened monogamy led to higher status of legal wives, on the one hand, and resulted in the discrimination of legal wives and concubines, on the other. It had the effect of divide and rule on women, concealing gender hierarchy. In this process, women``s sexuality and motherhood became the tools for male system.
