상류계층 공고화에 있어서의 상류계층 여성과 문화자본 = 한국의 서양고전음악전공여성 사례

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 부르디외(Bourdieu)의 사회학적 임무에 대한 믿음을 근거로 주요 연구를 분석하여 결국 그의 이론적 틀에서 중요한 것은 각각의 사회와 역사적 맥락에서 재생산을 가능하게 하는 어떤 ‘숨겨진 루트’를 찾아내는 것이며, 계속적으로 명료성의 논쟁이 계속 되고 있는 개념인 문화자본은 이러한 숨겨진 루트를 구성하고 있는 좀 더 포괄적이고 적응성 있는 개념이라고 주장한다. 본 연구에서는 한국사회의 특수한 ‘숨겨진 루트’로서 계층 공고화에 있어서의 여성의 역할과 서양 고전음악분야에 주목하였으며, 방법론적으로는 이론적인 개념을 연구하는데 있어 질문지를 통하여 수집된 양적 자료와 질적 자료인 인터뷰 자료를 통합하는 예시적인 모델을 시도한다. 한국사회에서 서양고전음악을 전공한 여성들에 대한 303부의 설문조사와 36사례의 심층면접자료들은 80퍼센트 이상의 응답자들이 상류계층 출신으로 사회이동이 광범위하게 개방되어 있는 기간동안에도 결혼을 통해 자신들의 계층적 배경을 성공적으로, 거의 완벽하게 재생산했음을 보여주고 있다. 또한 부모의 경제적인 자본에 근거한 체화된 문화자본이 서양고전음악의 특수성을 통하여 사회적으로 인정받는 제도화된 문화자본으로 전환되는 과정과 이렇게 전환된 제도화 된 자본이 그들의 계층 재생산을 사회적인 지위가 아닌 결혼에 의존하게 작용하는가를 분석함으로서 급격한 사회변동 하에서 한국의 상류계층이 형성되고 입지가 강화되는 과정에 있어서의 여성의 역할을 문화자본의 측면에서 고찰한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study investigates Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of cultural capital and social reproduction in the context of South Korean Women’s use of Western classical music to attain and/or reproduce economic status. The survey data about females majoring music in Korea (303 questionnaires and 36 in-depth interviews) made assured it that the females majoring in music constitute a very prestigious and selective group in the Korean society which reproduce their high-class status successfully through their marriage and established their own culture based on their exclusive life pattern. Through the study, I highlight the interaction between gender and social class, how for women, the attainment of cultural economic capital can be more complex process than is frequently assumed in the sociological literature. I also draw attention to the circular(rather than hierarchical/linear) routes available to women in the pursuit of upward mobility, and in the process I alert how different economic and cultural resources both structure and are constrained by broader cultural mores.
