It is in the period of liberation that Korean modern poetry written during the period of Japanese rule was first discussed and structured systematically. This study purposed to organize various discussions on the history of poetry by the left and right wings in those days and to analyze the discourse patterns of the discussions.
Many discussions on the history of poetry during the period of liberation aimed at the formation, preservation, and expanded reproduction of the poetic identity of the left and right wings. Both the left and right wings reinforced their poetic beliefs through proving their respective poetic values ‘politics’ and ‘purity’ in the diachronic context of the history of Korean modern poetry.
In order to examine this process, Chapter II examined the difference in view between Han Hyo and Seo Jeong‐joo who discussed the Romanticism of “Baekjo (白潮)” and the poems of the New Tendency Group and KAPF in the 1920s. Chapter III compared how Oh Jang‐hwan in the left wing and Seo Jeong‐joo in the right wing looked at Kim So‐wol’s poems. Chapter IV analyzed why the literati of the left and right wings, who confronted each other with advocating ‘practice’ and ‘spirit,’ respectively, criticized Jeong Ji‐yong’s poems in the 1930s, and how the criticism was extended to
