나한신앙과 그 한국적 전개

국문 초록 (Abstract)

아라한은 불교 수행자들이 지향하는 최고의 단계인 아라한과에 이른 자에서 출발, 대승불교에 이르러 스스로 깨달음을 얻은 후타인을 그 길로 인도하는 역할을 하는 불제자로 의미가 확대된다.
『법주기』 등에서 나타난 아라한의 주된 역할은 미륵불이 출현할 때까지 석가불의 정법을 잘 지키고 보호하는 것이며, ‘정법수
호’와 ‘요익중생’이란 목적을 이루고자 성과 속이 공존하는 입체적
성격으로 구체화된다. 또한 십육, 십팔, 오백, 천육백나한 등 아라한 개념이 보통명사화 되면서 정법의 평준화와 그 접근 용이성을 상징한다. 나한신앙은 삼국시대에서 조선 시대를 거치며 위로는 국난 극복과 왕실 강건을, 아래로는 복덕과 추복 기원에 이르기까지 다양한 요구에 답하며 전개되어 간다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Arahats are disciples of Buddha who have achieved Enlightenment as the highest goal in early buddhism. And they are developed to stay in Samsara to defend Buddhist Teaching and help sentient beings get enlightened like them without entering Nirvana for their own interests. According to several sutras including Fazhuji(法住記) the major role of arahats are of protecting Buddhist Teaching of Śākyamuni Buddha to deliver to Maitreya Buddha. Arahats are described to have round character of secularity and sanctity as well to fulfill the purpose of protecting Buddhist Teaching and benefitting all sentient beings. And concept of Five-Hundred-Arahats is symbolized to be un-exceptionality and accessability to Buddhist Teaching. From the period of th Three nation to Chosun, arahats beliefs had developed to meet demands of overcoming national crisis and stabilizing royal family from upper class and the reward of good luck and virtue from lower class concurrently .
