平北 義州地域語의 通時音韻論 : 母音體系의 再構와 變化를 중심으로 = Reconstruction of the Vowel Systems of the U˘iju (義州) Dialect and their Historical Changes

This study aims (1) to reconstruct the vowel systems of the Uˇiju dialect in the North P'yoˇngan province according to their developmental stages, and (2) to historically overview changes in those vowel systems throughout their different stages.
The historical phonology of the Korean language can be defined as the totality of the historical phonology of its individual dialects. The first step toward uncovering phonological change starts from identifying phonological systems, because phonological changes are mainly caused by changes in a phonological system itself. This study which primarily focuses upon the historical reconstruction of the vowel systems of the Uˇiju dialect will, therefore, contribute not only to the historical phonology of the Northwestern Korean dialect (which the Uˇiju dialect belongs to) in particular, but also to the historical phonology of the Korean language in general.
The Vowel systems of the Uˇiju dialect are mainly reconstructed by the method of internal reconstruction, based upon linguistic data of the area in the late 19th century and the present time. In case the reconstruction of that dialect can not be made by internal reconstruction alone, it may be assisted by the method of comparison between the subject dialect and the Central Korean dialect, as well as by inference from various research results on the historical phonology of the Central Korean dialect.
