영어권 문화 교육에 대한 인식과 이해 = Perception and Understanding of the Culture in EFL Learning

국문 초록 (Abstract)

외국어 학습에서 가장 큰 동기 유발 요인은 해당 외국어권 문화에 대한 이해이다. 우리나라의 영어학습은 동기적 요인으로 볼 때 입시나 승진 등 도구로서의 영어 학습 의식이 지배적인 상황인 바, 영어학습에서 영어권 배경 문화에 대한 이해가 보다 바람직한 동기를 부여할 수 있다고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 영어 교수자와 학습자를 대상으로 영어학습에서 영어권 문화에 대한 교육 현황에 대한 의식을 조사하고, 영어권 문화를 이용한 영어학습에서 영어 성취도는 어떤 영향을 받는 지를 살펴보기로 한다. 연구 결과, 교수자나 학습자 모두 영어권 문화에 대한 학습이 보다 다양한 경로로 적극적으로 이루어져야 한다는 것에 공감하고 있음이 밝혀졌고, 영어권 문화에 대한 수업이 학습자들의 영어학습에 동기유발 요인이 되고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 본 연구는 교육현장에서 영어권 문화에 대한 이해를 위한 교육이 선행 또는 동반되어야 보다 흥미 있고 효과적인 영어학습이 이루어 질 수 있음을 입증한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The most effective motivational factor in teaching and learning EFL is the understanding of the culture in English speaking countries. English as a practical tool is the main theme in learning English in South Korea, to which learners are oriented as learning English for college entrance or career promotion. For a desirable learning atmosphere, learners are needed to experience the culture in English speaking countries. The goal of this study is to explore teachers’ and learners’ perception of the target language culture and a potential correlation between learners’ understanding of the culture and their language proficiency. We conducted a survey with 112 highschool students and 190 secondary school teachers, and measure the correlation between English proficiency and the degree of cultural understanding with both highschool students and college students. The results demonstrate that both teachers and learners take cultural understanding as a prerequisite for foreign language learning, and highschool students show a correlation between English proficiency and cultural understanding. We suggest that teaching culture or using cultural materials in EFL classes help learners to get motivated and integrated with the culture.
