This study presents the development of analysis model to evaluate the interaction between molten core, concrete, and coolant in a pre-flooded reactor cavity. Starting from the debris conditions formed after Fuel–Coolant Interaction (FCI), the analysis focuses on simulating the subsequent ex-vessel progression, particularly the Molten Core–Concrete Interaction (MCCI), that governs concrete ablation. The work is conducted within the broader context of the SAFARI (Safety Analysis Code for Severe Accident Risk Identification) project, which aims to establish a regulatory grade integrated code system for severe accident analysis in South Korea. Developing a dedicated analysis code rather than relying solely on existing tools enables greater flexibility in implementing detailed physical coupling between debris formation and subsequent MCCI, thereby improving the fidelity of post-FCI MCCI simulations. In this context, coupling the FCI and MCCI codes is essential to ensure consistent post-FCI conditions.
The MCCI analysis code is developed based on fundamental conservation laws and includes key physical models for heat transfer, phase change, chemical reactions, and decay heat. Numerical stability and solution consistency are ensured through a node-based computational framework and time integration procedures. Validation of the developed code is conducted using established experimental data under both 1-D and 2-D configurations, confirming its capability to reproduce representative MCCI behavior.
A coupling methodology is then established between the developed MCCI code and an existing FCI code developed within the SAFARI project. The coupling approaches are categorized as one-way and two-way: the former transfers debris characteristics without further feedback, while the latter incorporates iterative interaction between the debris bed and underlying molten corium during MCCI progression, including containment pressure estimation. To ensure physical consistency in the coupled simulation, improvements are made to the MCCI code, including enhancements to data handling and interface structures.
Finally, the coupled analysis capability is applied to a plant-scale scenario for a reference 1000 MWe pressurized water reactor. Initial in-vessel conditions are obtained from MELCOR simulations, and the effects of post-FCI debris formation are considered under pre-flooding scenario. The standalone and system-coupled analysis are both employed to evaluate their impact on plant-scale severe accident scenario. The results demonstrate that the developed coupling methodology can simulate the transition from FCI to localized MCCI phenomena in a physically consistent manner. The analysis also highlights how the initial cavity water level and coupling approach influence the progression of concrete ablation and the associated containment pressurization, providing insights relevant to pre-flooding strategies for Severe Accident Management (SAM).
