기획논문 : 일반상식 속의 다문화주의와 다문화주의 속의 일반상식 = Multiculturalism in Common Sense versus Common Sense in Multiculturalism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

다문화주의는 서로 다른 문화, 서로 다른 가치, 서로 다른 사고 방식의 조화로운 공존을 지향한다. 한편, 상식은 사회의 구성원이 일반적으로 공유하는 지식, 가치, 일상생활의 경험을 지칭한다. 다문화주의와 상식은 다양화와 공유화라는 서로 상반되는 가치 지향성으로 인해 상호 모순의 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 한국사회에서 논의되는 다문화주의의 방향은 이미 규정한 다문화주의의 “상식”을사회 일반에 적용하고자 하는 움직임을 보이고 있다. 서로의 삶을 풍요롭게 할 수 있는 한국사회가필요로 하는 다문화주의는 어떻게 전개되어야 할것인가? 이 문제에 대해 필자는, 바람직한 다문화주의의 방향은 다문화주의의 상식을 먼저 상정 혹은 규정하고 이를 일방적으로 사회일반에 적용하는 것이아니라, 이와는 역으로 상식의 다원화를 먼저 풍성하게 하고 이를 기반으로 하여 다문화주의의 다양한 방향을 모색해야 한다고 제안한다. 상식의 다양화로부터 다문화주의의 모색은 무엇보다 한국사회가 갖고 있는 가치의 상식, 행동의 상식을 깨고, 이를 다양화하는 노력에서부터 시작되어야 할 것이다. 한국사회의 상식을 전제로 추진되는 다문화 주의는 다문화주의라는 미명 하에 기존의 상식을 합리화하고 강화시키는 반다문화주의의 위험성마저 내포하고 있기 때문이다. 어떻게 한국사회의 상식을 다원화하고 이를 다문화주의의 가치로 연결시킬 수 있을 것인가? 필자는 다문화주의의 바람직한 방향성을 기존 상식의 파괴에서 찾는다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the name of “multiculturalism,” we strive to embrace and harmonize a wide range of different cultures, values, and modes of thinking. On the other hand, in the name of “common sense,” we tend to impose a unified mode of knowledge, values, and daily experiences upon others. Multiculturalism (diversifying) and common sense (unifying) are prone to mutual conflict due to their opposing value orientations. In Korean society, we see that discussions of multiculturalism show a tendency in which multiculturalism is defined and promoted within the dominant common sense of society. In what manner should multiculturalism be pursued so as to enrich the lives of Korean people? Hur suggests that the desirable direction of multiculturalism lies not in unilaterally applying the pre-defined common sense of multiculturalism upon society, but in diversifying the extant common sense first and then pursuing multiculturalism on a diversified mode of common sense. How can we diversify the common sense of Korean society? We could start with an effort to deconstruct the common sense that dictates the values and behavior of Korean people. Multiculturalism, which is sought within the extant common sense might rather lead to justifying and reinforcing the latter and, thereby, to fostering a stereotype of multiculturalism that might run counter to multiculturalism. To avoid this adverse cycle, what should be done? Hur suggests that the common sense that dominates Korean society be first brought into question for its deconstruction, and that multiculturalism be then fostered and pursued free of the constraint of traditional common sense.
