『죽은 혼』에 나타난 고골의 경제관에 대한 성서적 반성: 근대적인 경제 모델에 대한 대안 모색 = Biblical Reflections on Gogol's Economic Viewpoint in Dead Souls: Searching for Russian Alternative to Modern Economic Model

This study aims to analyse Gogol's reflections on contemporary agricultural economy and modern economism in Russia, and his Orthodoxy-based alternative to them in the 1st and 2nd volumes of Dead Souls from the viewpoint of biblical economic ethics. It is based on the covenant of mutual love and commitment between God and humans, activating the virtuous gift-giving circle, with Jesus Christ as a mediator.
In the two volumes, Gogol depicted the crisis of Russian rural villages, where serfs were exploited through severe taxation by corrupt officials and landlords. Gogol deplored the cultural and economic depravation of all Russians from landlords to serfs under the ruinous influence of the modern economism, based on Enlightenment and Utilitarianism, which was responsible considerably for the distortion of human sublime desires given from God to egoistic desires in modernized Russian society.
He searched for a way to transform the depraved Russian society to Christian state, where spirituality will be acknowledged as superior to physical desires, where patrimonial monarchy and serfdom will be implemented in ideal way, and where Christian masters will discipline themselves and their peasants, implementing an environment-friendly and resource-recycling industrial development based on agriculture, etc.
From the biblical viewpoint, Gogol's alternatives includes biblical and non-biblical elements. The latter include the Old Testament-based worldview, worldly utopianism, idealization of Russian Soul, Czar, Russian Orthodoxy, etc. Gogol's alternative models are worthy of reflection on and transformation into a more biblical version.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 성서적 기독교에 따른 경제윤리에 근거하여 『죽은 혼』의 제1권과 제2권에 나타난 19세기 전반기 러시아의 농업 경제와 근대 경제주의에 대한 고골의 사회적, 심리적, 종교적 성찰을 조명하고 그가 제시한 대안적 모델을 반성하는 데 목적을 둔다. 성서적 경제윤리는 신-인간-자연 간의 선물주기 gift-giving의 원칙을 따르며, 그 원형은 성삼위일체인 성부-성자-성령의 일치와 유기적인 조화이다. 성서적 윤리에 따르면, 인간은 신이 정한 원칙에 따라 신-인간, 인간-인간 사이의 계약을 충실히 지키면 선물주기의 선순환 구조가 형성되어 인간의 경제활동이 지속적인 부의 증대로 이어질 수 있다. 반면, 인간이 그 계약을 어기면 선물주기가 왜곡된 방식으로 작용하여 물질적 부도 감소하고 자연도 피폐해진다.
『죽은 혼』의 제1권과 2권에서 고골은 19세기 전반기와 중반기에 러시아의 농촌 현실이 피폐해지는 과정을 그로테스크한 방식으로 생생하게 재현하고, 제2권에서 기독교 경제윤리를 제시한다. 고골은 제1권, 2권에서 러시아의 억압적인 조세 제도, 지배층을 중심으로 서구의 경제주의와 소비주의의 맹목적인 추종, 허술한 농지 관리 등이 러시아 농촌의 위기를 가중시킨 것으로 그리고 있다. 고골은 특히 치치코프의 신흥경제범죄에 서구의 경제사상과 공리주의가 미친 부정적인 영향을 심리적, 종교적으로 조명하고, 인간의 이성과 욕망에 대한 근대인들의 낙관주의를 비판한다.
고골은 제2권에서 러시아 농촌의 문제를 유형화하고 서구 경제모델에 대한 기독교적인 대안을 제시한다. 그 모델은 인간의 영적인 변형과 구원의 우선성, 지주의 모범적이고 헌신적인 농민 관리자로서의 책임, 농업 중심의 자연친화적인 제조업과 산업의 발달 등을 골자로 하며, 이는 성서적인 경제윤리와 상당히 부합한다. 그러나 그의 시각은 구약 중심의 역사관과 사회관, 현세적인 유토피아주의, 러시아성에 대한 이상화, 농노제와 전제정의 절대화 등, 신약중심의 성서적인 경제윤리와 일치하지 않는 사상들도 포함한다. 그럼에도 고골이 제안하는 농업경제 모델은 오늘날 러시아 경제위기를 해결하는 데 기여할 수 있는 잠재성을 지니고 있으므로 이를 재조명, 재구성할 필요가 있다.
