말콤 드 샤잘의 시에 나타난 감각과 공간의 현상학 -시집 『마술적 감각 Sens magique』을 중심으로 = The Phenomenology of the Senses and the Space in the Poetry of Malcolm de Chazal: Focusing on his Sens Magique

Malcolm de Chazal is a poet from Mauritius, French speaking African nation, known for building his own poetic realm by poeticizing unity between mysticism and senses. He appealed enormously to surrealists by creating distinctive image crossing the border between human and object, object and object, and human and world, but he refused to be labeled as a surrealist throughout his life. The purpose of this study is to keep track of his poetic journey that started from senses and led to thoughts, focusing on his major collection of poems Sens magique, and examine characteristics of aphoristic writing that realized it. By exploring his poetic achievements, the study aims to identify Malcolm de Chazal’s significance in literature history, who did not received much attention in the history of French poetry yet took his own path on the border of surrealism.
Chazal’s poems consistently put emphasis on phenomenological message that subject and object, and human and world are not separated but united to create an ontological stage. To get the message across, Chazal richly embodied his two poetic concepts in his work: le sixième sens (the sixth sense) and la volupté (lust). ‘Le sixième sens’ refers to synesthetic unity between color and sense, and ‘la volupté’ stands for unity between mind and body of all creatures in the world.
Chazal’s poetry is composed in aphoristic form favored by surrealists. The difference is that surrealism’s aphorism seeks an overthrow of ordinary language by using word play and parodying conventional phrases, maxims and proverbs while his poetry is fairy-tale-like and mystic due to use of extremely simple and ordinary poetic words, and forms a sensuous and primitive world. As demonstrated by his unique poetic form that combines West’s aphorism, and East’s haiku and poème-conversation, his poems reflect his positive view of value that envisions unity of the whole world. His view of world is expressed as a circle’s phenomenology that a center spreads into a circle and the circle is condensed back to the center. In such a geometric form, the poet reads the infinity of space and time, and human and world, which enables him to convey a concentrated message that emphasizes unity and return of internal and outside, self and other, and human and world.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

말콤 드 샤잘 Malcolm de Chazal은 프랑스어권 아프리카 지역인 일 모리스 Ile Maurice 출신 시인으로, 신비주의와 감각의 합일을 시화(詩化)하는 독자적인 시세계를 구축했다. 인간과 사물, 사물과 사물, 인간과 세계의 경계를 넘나드는 독특한 이미지로 초현실주의자들에게 큰 주목을 받았으나, 그 스스로는 초현실주의자이기를 끝까지 거부했던 시인이다. 본 논문은 그 이유가 무엇인지를 질문하면서, 초현실주의 주변에 서서 독자적인 길을 걸어 간 이 시인의 시적 성취를 밝힘으로써 프랑스 시사에서 크게 조명 받지 못한 시인의 문학사적 의의를 규명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 그의 대표적인 시집인 『마술적 감각 Sens magique』을 중심으로 감각에서 출발하여 사유로 이르는 시적 여정을 추적하고, 그것을 구현하는 아포리즘적 글쓰기의 특징을 분석하고 있다.
주체와 대상, 주체와 세계가 분리된 것이 아니라 세계와 인간이 함께 결합하여 존재론적 장을 만들어간다는 것이 샤잘의 시에 일관되게 강조되는 현상학적 메시지다. 이를 위해 시인은 색채와 감각의 공감각적 합일을 일컫는 ‘제 6의 감각 le sixième sens’과 세상만물의 육체와 정신적 합일을 일컫는 ‘관능 la volupté’이라는 개념을 시 속에서 풍요롭게 구현하고 있다.
샤잘의 시는 초현실주의자들이 즐겨 사용했던 아포리즘 형식으로 구성되어 있다. 그러나 초현실주의 아포리즘이 관습화된 문구나 격언, 속담을 패러디하고 언어의 유희를 통해 일상 언어의 전복을 꾀하고 있음에 비해, 샤잘의 시적 아포리즘은 관습화된 언어의 전복이라는 목적보다는 일상 언어를 그대로 사용하면서 동화적이고 신비로우며, 감각적이고 원초적인 세계를 구축하는 데 더욱 경도되어 있다. 이러한 샤잘의 시는 서구의 아포리즘과 대화시 poème-conversation가 혼합된 독특한 시형식을 개척하면서, 세상의 총체적인 합일을 꿈꾸는 그의 긍정적인 세계관을 투영한다. 이러한 세계관은 중심이 원으로 확산되고, 원이 다시 중심으로 응집되는 원의 현상학으로 표출된다. 시인은 점, 선, 원이 그려내는 기하학적 형태 속에서 공간과 시간, 인간과 세계의 무한함을 읽어낸다. 이를 통해 시인은 안과 밖, 자아와 타자, 인간과 세계의 합일과 회귀의 메시지를 집약하여 표출하고 있다.
