I begin with an anecdote: the chapter I wrote in the year of 1985 for the textbook for the course on gender equality in my university was rejected by the anonymous editors, to be accepted only after an open forum I had demanded. I was influenced by the women`s movements during my graduate years at Berkeley in the 60s, and, upon return from America, in 1976 I opened the first course on "the sociology of women" in my university. It was the reason why I was involved in the development of the university course on women`s studies. But I came to see that while highly educated women were liberated, other women were not. That my chapter was directed at the emerging inequality among women, namely between the women knowledge class and the others, was the probable reason for its rejection by members of that knowledge class in the guise of editors. I gradually departed from feminist liberalism and found it highly helpful to build on the insights of care ethics as I moved close to the epistemology of communitarian theories. I close the paper with the argument that the feminist value of caring leads beyond a gender discourse to an ecological discourse on making community with nature and living as green citizens.
