Was Jesus a pacifist of principle, or did his opposition to an uprising against Rome owe more to his evaluation of its likely outcome? How far did sociological factors influence both the pacifism of early Christianity and the subsequent rise of the just-war tradition? How far do either of these traditions help us in considering the wholly new situation which has arisen since the development of nuclear weapons? These are some of the questions addressed in this essay which seeks to relate the insights of the past to the problems of the present.
