      As technology penetrates into everyday life, designers must consider people and society in addition to industrial value in the design process. This study focuses on design fiction. Design fiction is familiar in the design research, but ambiguity existed. However, design fiction has different characteristics from those of existing design studies and its purpose is different. therefore, this study intends to identify what design fiction is. First, we identified the areas that affected the formation of design fiction. Then, the characteristics of design fiction were defined by analyzing case studies and theories. We also classify the research types and purposes of design fiction with these characteristics. As a result, design fiction is an extension of design activity that is not affected by the commercial design process for designers, and is an artist activity that conveys designer messages. Design fiction is designed with diverse media based on technology and social phenomena that are difficult for the public to understand. This allows the public to witness the results of technology the near future. The purpose of the study of design fiction is for preliminary experiments, critical exploration, and social discussion on the value of technology. Design fiction is familiar in the design research, but ambiguity existed.
