브레히트의 「갈릴레이의 생애」와 갈릴레이의 『대화』 — 과학자 갈릴레이의 사회적 책임문제 재검토 — = Brecht’s “Life of Galileo” and Galileo’s Dialogue: Revisiting the Problem of Social Responsibility in the Case of Galileo Galilei

This essay aims to reexamine the problem of social responsibility in the case of Galileo Galilei by reading together Brecht’s Life of Galileo and Galileo’s Dialogue.. The former is a dramatic work that revolves around the life of Galileo who is known to have withdrawn his theory of heliocentrism to escape political repression while the latter is a science book where three different scientists, representing three different scientific perspectives, discuss the heliocentric theory in a dialogic manner.
Attending on doubt as an essential scientific attitude in both the works, this essay explains that doubt results in duality in the character of Galileo in “Life of Galileo,” which now hinders him from acting ethically and, in contrast, via hysterical resistance to institutionalizing or politicizing, in sublimity in Dialogue in the Lacanian sense that one idealizes an object of symbolic lack into an object of the real truth awaiting new exploration ever. I conclude thus that the scientist would take social responsibility either by stopping being scientific in adoption of a political stance or by being sheer scientific in denial of any political system.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 브레히트의 「갈릴레이의 생애」와 갈릴레이의 『대화』를 비교하여 읽음으로써 갈릴레이 사례를 중심으로 제기되는 과학자의 사회적 책임의 문제를 재검토한다. 전자는 갈릴레이의 학설철회 사건을 중심으로 과학자의 사회적 책임의 문제를 묻는다면 후자는 지동설에 대한 과학자들의 다른 태도를 통해 이상적 과학자의 모습을 그린다. 본고는 「생애」와 『대화』가 공통적으로 과학자의 태도로서 회의를 강조하는 반면 그 회의가 사회적이며 윤리적인 차원에서 「생애」에서는 양면성으로, 『대화』에서는 숭고성으로 구체화함을 밝힌다. 전자는 과학자의 사회적 책임을 강조하고자하는 작가의 의도에도 불구하고 과학의 양면성이 부각되면서 과학자 또한 체제저항적인 회의를 품고도 그 이중적 성격으로 인해 사회적 책임으로부터 후퇴할 수밖에 없는 인물임을 보여준다면 후자에서 과학자는 회의를 통해 모든 사물을 진리의 담지자로서 격상시키며 어떤 체제에 도달하려 하지 않는 히스테리컬한 자로서 기존 체제를 비판하는 자임을 보여준다. 이는 과학에서 과학자가 사회적 책임을 떠맡는 일은 과학적이기를 멈추고 보다 직접적으로 정치적이 되거나 혹은 더욱 과학적이 됨으로써 과학의 비정치성의 정치성을 실현하는 방식이어야 함을 의미한다.
