식민주의 이데올로기의 전복: 󰡔별을 헤아리며󰡕에 나타나는 안네마리의 역할 분석 = The Subversion of Colonial Ideology: Analysing of Annemarie’s Role in Number the Stars

국문 초록 (Abstract)

로이스 로리(Lois Lowry)의 󰡔별을 헤아리며󰡕(Number the Stars)는 2차 세계대전의 식민주의 이데올로기 속에서 이중적 타자로 존재하고 있는 열 살 소녀 안네마리(Annemarie)와 주변 인물들이 또 다른 타자 집단인 유대인 가족들을 돕는 과정을 그리고 있다. 특수한 환경 속에서 안네마리가 부모를 비롯한 어른 캐릭터들과 어떠한 관계 속에서 어떠한 역할을 수행하며 살아가고 있는지 분석하는 본 연구는 전쟁이라는 식민의 상황에 대응하는 소설 속 아동 캐릭터들의 처지가 사회와 어른들로부터 식민화되어있는 실제 아동청소년들의 모습과 다르지 않음을 밝히며 그동안 아동청소년문학 비평의 한 갈래가 되어온 아동의 타자성 담론을 규명한다. 본고는 안네마리가 지배 이데올로기를 ‘역이용’하는 역할수행 전략을 보임으로써 그 속에서 식민/피식민, 어른/아동의 경계가 어떻게 허물어지는지 고찰하면서 󰡔별을 헤아리며󰡕가 아동청소년이라는 한정된 대상과 시대를 뛰어넘어 현재를 살아가는 우리로 하여금 고정된 역할과 관계로부터 벗어나 주체적 개인으로의 긍정적 변화를 이끄는 작품으로 그 의의가 있음을 밝힌다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Lois Lowry’s Number the Stars is a children's novel that tells the story of a ten-year-old girl, Annemarie, and other characters around her as they help a Jewish family amidst the backdrop of colonialist ideology during World War II. This study analyzes how the child characters, including Annemarie, live their lives in relation to their parents and other adult characters in these specific circumstances. Through this analysis, it reveals that the children’s situation in the novel, responding to the colonizing effects of war, is not different from the realities faced by real children and adolescents outside the novel who are influenced by societal colonization. The study identifies the discourse of otherness in children, which has been a part of the criticism of children's literature. In addition, this paper examines how Annemarie’s ‘subversion’ of the dominant ideology breaks down fixed social roles and relationships, revealing the significance of Number the Stars as a work that enlightens not only children but also general readers about problematic ideologies and intolerant values in our society.
