The purpose of this study is to research the developing way for Korean language curriculum of Korean studies departments in Kyrgyzstan region and to make a contribution to the effective Korean language educational progress in Korean studies departments in Kyrgyzstan. This is because Korean language education in Korean studies departments of Kyrgyzstan doesn't have systematic development due to the absence of clear educational objectives and goals and changing of the Korean language education's situation every year.
The fundamental goals of the study are to analyze Korean language curriculum in Korean studies departments of four universities in Kyrgyzstan, to grasp problems and try to find a proceeding course.
There are three kinds of issues discussed in this study. First is a present situation of the Korean language education in Korean studies departments in Kyrgyzstan region. Presently 452 students study Korean language in 10 universities of Kyrgyzstan, 283 students of them study Korean language as a major at Korean studies department in 4 universities. And the number of Korean language learners is rising continuously. And the number of applicants for the Korean language proficiency test, which is held in Kyrgyzstan every year since 2002, is growing as well. And the number of Korean language learners, who wish to study in Korea, is growing with the number of students, who are already studying in Korea.
The second is an understanding of the Korean language curriculum problems in Korean studies departments in Kyrgyzstan region through Korean language teachers' and students' demand analysis. According to the survey of Korean language learners, the main purposes of learning Korean at Korean studies departments are studying in Korea(37.5%) and getting a job(32.5%). The most difficult thing in learnig Korean are writing(27.5%) and speaking(20%). And things, Korean learners want the most to be good at, are speaking(40%) and writing(27.5%) as well. And the problems, which were discussed with Korean language teachers on the interview, are teachers' professionalism, problems of korean language teaching materials, teaching methods and evaluation.
The third is a drawing out some suggestions on Korean language curriculum in Korean studies departments in Kyrgyzstan. A thing, to pay attention to, is a necessity of not only Korean as a general purpose curriculum, but Korean as an academic purpose curriculum as well. That is because the number of students, who want to study in Korea, is growing continuously. Concerning Korean teaching materials, which are used in universities of Kyrgyzstan, it is necessary to improve a content of dialogues in them. Because there is a big difference between korean dialogues appearing in teaching materials and real korean dialogues appearing in real life. In addition, it is necessary to reconstruct Korean language textbooks to make it appropriate for regional and students' conditions. Concerning teaching methods, it is necessary to get out of grammar-translation method, audio-lingual method and elementary communicative method, and improve content-based language teaching, grammar-strengthened communication-based teaching, writing and speaking instruction focused methods. Concerning evaluation, it is necessary to make an effort to improve evaluation's validity and reliability, to focus on the ripple effect and evaluate his/her own teaching quality, teaching content and teaching methods.
