한국 만화 협단체의 역사 = The History of Korean Comics Association

국문 초록 (Abstract)

민주 사회에서는 결사의 자유가 있다. 한국의 만화가들도 오래전부터 협단체를 만들어 활동해 왔으며 저질, 탄압의 시비가 잦은 만화가들로서는 결속이 더욱 공고해질 수밖에 없었다. 근대 만화 태동기부터 해방 이후 협회까지 만화 또는 만화 작가 협회는 명칭은 달랐으되 꾸준하게 이합집산을 거듭해 왔다. 근대 시기 발아기를 거쳐 1945년 해방 이후 많은 만화 단체가 설립되었다. 단체들은 검열과 표현의 자유를 위해 분투했으며, 한편으로는 독과점과 저질 시비에도 대항해야 했다. 또한, 1990년대는 표현의 자유를 위해 연합체를 만들어 싸우기도 했다. 1990년대 이후에는 장르별, 성별, 이념에 따라 다양한 단체가 나타났다. 이러한 만화 협단체의 움직임은 만화 자율, 창작의 자유, 산업에 이르기까지 수많은 영향을 주고받았다. 본 연구는 한국의 만화 협단체 역사를 최초로 정리한다는 데 의의가 있으며, 역사와 그 의미를 탐구할 것이다. 연구 방법으로 각종 문헌조사와 언론 보도 및 문서 자료, 그리고 연구 과제에서의 직접 인터뷰 내용을 인용 처리하고 해석을 달았다. 웹툰과 같은 디지털 시대에 접어들어도 단체는 더욱 분화되거나 전문화하는 경향을 띤다. 특기할 사항은 수도권집중에 맞서 지역 협단체가 늘고 있다는 것이다. 국토의 균형 발전과 건강한 한국의 웹툰 생태계를 위해서도 필요충분조건일 것이다. 한국 만화계의 협단체는 그동안 작가 권익을 보호하는 기본적인 소명 외에도 표현의 자유등을 위해 노력해 왔다. 21세기 웹툰의 시대에는 건전한 생태계 구축을 위한 과제도 놓여 있다. 고난과 영광의만화 역사와 함께한 협단체의 흐름은 한국 만화사 그 자체다. 협단체 역사를 짚어 보는 본 연구가 한국 만화 웹툰 역사의 한 페이지를 탐구하는 기초 자료로 활용되길 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In a democratic society, freedom of association is a fundamental right. For a considerable period, South Korean cartoonists have actively formed professional associations and organizations. Given the frequent controversies surrounding issues of low-quality content and censorship, the need for robust solidarity among cartoonists became particularly pronounced. From the nascent stages of modern comics to the post-liberation era, associations representing comics or cartoonists, despite variations in their nomenclature, consistently experienced cycles of formation, dissolution, and reformation. Following the foundational period of modern comics and specifically after the liberation in 1945, numerous cartoonist organizations were established. These groups not only campaigned vigorously for freedom of expression against censorship but also contended with challenges such as monopolistic practices and accusations of producing low-quality material. Furthermore, the 1990s witnessed the formation of various alliances specifically dedicated to advocating for artistic freedom. Post-1990, the landscape of organizations diversified further, with new associations emerging based on genre, gender, and ideological affiliations. The collective actions of these cartoonist associations have profoundly influenced numerous aspects of the comics ecosystem, ranging from fostering greater autonomy and creative freedom to impacting the industry itself. This study holds significance as it represents the first attempt to systematically organize the history of Korean cartoonist associations, while also exploring their historical trajectory and broader implications. The research methodology incorporates a comprehensive review of relevant literature, analysis of press reports and documentary sources, as well as the citation and interpretation of direct interviews conducted within the scope of the research project. Even as we transition into the digital era, marked by phenomena like webtoons, these organizations tend to become even more specialized and fragmented. A notable trend is the increasing proliferation of regional associations, challenging the traditional concentration of such groups in the capital region. This endeavor is also a necessary and sufficient condition for the balanced development of the nation and the cultivation of a healthy webtoon ecosystem in Korea. Beyond their fundamental mission of safeguarding the rights of artists, associations within the Korean comics industry have also endeavored to defend freedom of expression. In the era of twenty-first century webtoons, they now face the pressing task of fostering a sustainable and healthy creative ecosystem. The trajectory of these associations, intertwined with both the hardships and triumphs of Korean comics, constitutes an integral part of the nation’s comics history itself. It is hoped that this study, by tracing the history of such associations, will serve as a foundational resource for exploring a vital chapter in the broader history of Korean comics and webtoons.
