마음에 관한 존재론적 반성 중간발표 보고서

국문 초록 (Abstract)

백도형 : 비환원적 물리주의를 비판하는 김재권의 배제 논변에 대해 비환원적 물리주의자들은 일반화 논변으로 응수하였다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 일반화 논변에 대해 검토하고 그 결과 이러한 일반화 논변은 그것이 겨냥하고 있는 심신 환원주의 뿐만 아니라 그것을 제기한 심신 비환원주의자들에게도 치명타를 가할 수 있는 양날의 칼이 될 수 있음을 보이려 한다. 그리고 이러한 결과를 종합하면 심신 문제에 관해 제거주의와 심신 유명론의 두 입장이 남는다. 이제 이 두 입장이 일반화 논변의 공격으로부터 어떻게 살아남을 수 있는 지 살펴 보고, 특별히 최근 심리철학의 흐름에서 일반화 논변이 갖는 의미를 추적해 보고 심신 유명론이 일반화 논변에 대해 갖는 중요한 의미를 살펴 본다.

이종왕 : 김재권의 사건은 속성예화이다. 즉 보편자인 속성이 일으킨 또는 그 속성을 가진 한 실체가 한 특정한 시간에 일으킨 존재이다. 그러나 이러한 사건이 과연 특수자일 수 있는가하는 문제는 어느 정도의 논쟁적 요소를 지니고 있더라도 그것이 특수자가 되기 위해서 큰 어려움을 던지지는 못한다. 그리고 데이비슨에 의해서 촉발되었던 정신적 속성들의 인과적 힘과 관련된 논의는 많은 철학자들의 관심을 불러일으킨다. 여기서 필자는 두 가지의 부수현상론을 검토한다.

박소정 : 본 연구의 목적은 심적 인과 문제와 관련하여 최근 한 가지 강력한 환원론적 모델로 제시된 김재권(Kim 1998)의 물리적 실현론을 비판적으로 고찰하면서 심물 환원을 귀결하는 존재론적 가정들과 방법론적 문제들을 비판적으로 검토해 보려는 것이다.

Tohyung Paik : Nonreductive physicalists responded the generalization argument against Jaegwon Kim`s exclusion argument which criticised nonreductive physicalism. This article examines the generalization argument and shows that the argument refutes decisively psychophysical reductionism as well as psychophysical nonreductionism. Therefore, except Cartesian substance dualism, which few philosophers agree with now, There remain only the two possible positions in mind-body problem, that is, eliminativism and psychophysical nominalism. And this article examines the two positions can survive from the attack of the generalization argument, and inquires the significance of the generalization argument and psychophysical nominalism.

Jong-Wang Lee : Kim`s event is the property-instantiation account of events. That is, an event is something that a property as a universal or a property that a substance has generates at a particular time. Whether his event can be a particular has been controversial from a metaphysical point of view. However, his theory of events, if a bit controversial, does not seem to provide us with a big difficulty with the event ontology and furthermore the problem of mental causation. Here, I provide two concepts of epiphenomenalism, Davidsonian and Fodorian epiphenomenalisms, to discuss the problem of mental causation that Davidson started to raise in depth. Since he does not accept the existence of properties as universals into his ontological world, Davidson is clearly committed to the problem of the so-called mental property epiphenomenalism. By contrast, Fodor is also committed to the problem of epiphenomenalism since he regards `ceteris paribus laws` as genuine causal laws. In so doing, Fodor`s theory of mental causation comes to violate the principle of causal exclusion. Davidson`s theory is too strong to be a sound theory of mental causation in that his ontological world is composed of mere particulars and it is only explained in terms of the developed physics, which is too strict, while Fodor`s theory is weak in a sense that he accepts supervenience theory as a plausible theory of mental causation, and thus violates the causal exclusion principle. I here try to provide a certain alternative.

So Jeong Park : The purpose of this paper is to critically assess Kim`s strategies in his reductive theory of physical realization, and argue against some of the assumptions on which they are based. First I argue that Kim uses ‘realism’ in two unequivalent ways, and it involves unjustified assumptions to get the exclusion principle off the ground. Regarding the status of the mental property in nature, I argue that the individualistic intuition to which the reductive realization appeals is at best moot, and construct some non-reductive strategies to weaken the force of the intuition. Lastly, its implication on the alternative construal of mental causation is suggested.
