Cultural differences have been found in individuals` perceptions, attitude, and behaviors. The framework of individualism-collectivism has been used for explaining the cultural differences since Hofsted(1980)`s introduction. However, the classification of individual and collective culture is no longer considered adequate for explaining communication behavior because country-level culture is too diffuse a concept. Markus and Kitayama`s self-construal(1991) has attempted to overcome the limitations of individualism-collectivism. Since then, about 290 self-construal articles have been published over twenty years. In this study, the author reviews the origin of self-construal and the present research tendency of self-construals, and discusses the extension of the self-construal study in communication. He suggest that more diverse application of self-consrtual to communication areas be helpful to extend our knowledge about the cultural influence on individuals` everyday life, especially in within cultural settings.
