조각보를 응용한 두루마기형 의상디자인 연구 = Korean Style Coat Form Design Applied Patchwork 'Chogakbo'

Culture is being accumulated into the consciousness of an ethic group passing generation to generation and being expressed as modeling that has no affectation so that it can finally be sublimated into the unique beauty of the ethic group and creative art. Dress code is a precious cultural data that reflects the civilization, society, life style, social position who wears it and eventually the thoughts and value of the time as it is learned from tradition and changing as time goes by.
Today is the time of industrialization and globalization and the effort to globalize our design by modernizing our tradition is being accelerated. Hence we have to focus on globalizing Korean design applying our own tradition and invigorating studies on tradition so that we can establish our identity in the age of globalization.
Tradition is an expression of formality which was based on historical development of life style. Also, it has established and succeeded the consciousness of the ethic group based on formativeness and technique. Thus, this research has selected the patchwork which involves the women's emotion of the age - women who had natural sense of beauty baseed on the naturalism of our ancestors - and the formative characters of Korean traditional dress code as the research motive.
Thus, this research has studied the 'Durumagi type' costume works to which Korean traditional dress code and patchwork were applied so that we can globalize Korean culture and Korean dress code. Korean traditional patchwork is a kind of household items and it shows off the outstanding sense of color and wisdom of life that our ancestors had. It deserves to be reconsidered in modern fashion design as it reflects the recycling attitude that reuses the abandoned cloth, refinement of geometric structure, balance of color and creator's will on formativeness. Thus, the formativeness of patchwork that expresses the superiority of women's quarters art using cloth among our women's quarters culture was applied to Korean dress code design.
Theoretical study on traditional dress code and patchwork has been proceeded as following.
This research has analyzed the formative characters of Korean traditional dress code and patchwork through related literature and relics. Hence this research is comprised of art work creation and interpretation.
Thus, I, the lead researcher aim to develop the design of women's top using traditional factors of patchwork and Korean traditional dress code.
Naturally dyed materials such as Oksa and ramie cloth were used and accent color was properly applied to the tone on tone color which contains modern feeling.
Theoretical study through literature was accompanied by practical study based on picture data. Data from dress code history and previous research paper was used for literature study and data from internet and museum was used for practical study respectively.
As for detailed research contents, the origin and formativeness of patchwork was analyzed first.
Second, formative characters of Korean traditional dress code, characters of jeogori and durumagi and period type were analyzed. Cases of costume design using patchwork was studied, too. Third, total 4 works of durumagi type women's top were created applying the collar and the outer collar which are components of jeogori. The collar and outer collar were selected from modern color and face composition like modern abstract painting that patchwork has and formative characters of Korean traditional dress code.
This research has tried to seek for our ancestors' wisdom that reuses remnants, the form and color of patchwork technique like modern abstract painting and the opportunity of modern design development applying the characters of Korean traditional dress code.
From now on, various studies on design should be carried out so that our traditional beauty can achieve recognition in globalized cultural area. That's why we have to reinterpret our tradition with modern sense of beauty based on proper self-awareness. Plus, our own identity should be recovered.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

문화는 세대를 거쳐 전수되어 한 민족의 의식 속에 함축되어지고, 꾸밈없는 조형으로 표출됨으로써 그 민족 고유의 아름다움과 독창적인 예술로 승화된다. 복식은 다른 문화현상과 마찬가지로 전통으로부터 전승되어 시간이 지나면서 변화하므로 그 시대 문명과 사회, 사람들의 생활방식, 착용자의 신분이나 사회적 지위 나아가 해당 시대의 사상과 가치관을 잘 반영한 귀중한 문화적 자료이다.
요즘 산업화, 세계화되는 사회에서 전통의 현대화 과정을 통해 우리의 디자인을 세계화하려는 노력은 가속화되고 있고, 우리의 전통을 응용한 한국적인 디자인을 세계화하려는 노력이 필요한 때이며 전통에 대한 연구를 활성화하여 세계화시대에 우리 고유의 독자성을 찾는데 힘써야한다.
전통이란 민족생활 양식의 역사적 발전을 바탕으로 형성된 정신을 통한 형식의 표현, 조형성 및 기법을 토대로 민족의 양식을 세우고 계승한 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 우리 선조의 자연주의사상을 바탕으로 한 자연스럽고 작위적이지 않은 미적 감각을 자랑하는 당시 여성들의 정서가 담긴 조각보와 한국 전통 복식의 조형적 특성을 모티브로 선택하였다.
따라서 본 연구에서는 한국문화와 한국복식의 세계화를 위해 한국 전통 복식과 조각보를 응용한 두루마기형 의상 작품을 연구하였다. 한국 전통 조각보는 우리 조상들의 탁월한 색채에 대한 감각과 삶의 지혜가 돋보이는 생활용품으로 버려진 천을 다시 사용했던 선조들의 재활용 정신과 기하학적 구조의 세련미, 색채의 조화, 제작자의 조형의지를 담고 있기 때문에 현대 패션 디자인에도 새롭게 조명할 가치가 있다. 따라서 우리 규방문화 중 직물을 사용하여 규방예술의 우수성을 표현한 조각보의 조형성을 한국복식디자인에 응용하였다.
전통 복식과 조각보에 대한 이론적 연구를 다음과 같이 진행하였다.
본 연구는 조각보와 한국 전통 복식의 문헌자료와 유물을 통해 조각보와 한국 전통 복식의 조형적 특성을 분석하여, 이를 바탕으로 한 작품제작 및 해설로 구성되어 있다.
이에 본 연구자는 조각보와 한국 전통 복식의 전통적인 요소를 활용한 여성 상의의 디자인 개발을 목적으로 한다.
소재는 옥사, 모시 등의 전통소재로 천연염색한 소재를 사용하고, 색채배색은 현대적 느낌이 나는 톤온톤 배색에 액센트 컬러를 적절히 사용하여 배색한다.
연구의 방법은 문헌연구를 통한 이론적 고찰과 그림 자료를 바탕으로 한 실증적 연구를 병행하였다. 문헌연구는 복식사 자료, 선행연구논문자료 등을 참고하였고, 실증연구를 위한 자료는 인터넷, 박물관 등의 자료를 활용하였다.
구체적인 연구내용으로는 첫째, 조각보의 기원과 조형성을 분석하였다.
둘째, 한국 전통 복식의 조형적 특성과 저고리, 두루마기의 특징, 시대적 유형을 분석하였고, 조각보를 응용한 의상디자인 사례를 살펴보았다. 셋째, 조각보의 현대적인 색채와 현대추상회화와 같은 면구성 표현과 한국 전통 복식의 조형적 특성 중 저고리의 구성요소인 깃, 섶 등을 응용하여 두루마기형 여성상의 총 4점의 작품을 제작하였다.
본 연구에서 자투리 천을 재활용하는 우리 조상들의 지혜를 엿볼 수 있는 조각보기법의 현대추상회화 같은 형태, 색채와 한국 전통 복식의 특성을 응용하여 현대적 느낌의 디자인 발전 가능성을 모색해보았다.
본 연구를 계기로 후속 연구를 통해 세계화속에서 우리의 고유성을 회복하기 위해 전통에 대한 올바른 자각을 바탕으로 전통을 현대적인 미감으로 재해석하여 발전시켜 우리의 미를 세계문화권에서 인정 받을 수 있도록 앞으로 다양한 디자인 연구가 더욱 활발히 시도되기를 바란다.
