Objective: This study aimed to compare the overall survival and disease free survival between laparoscopically-assisted staging surgery and laparotomic staging surgery for primary epithelial ovarian cancer.
Methods: We reviewed clinical charts of women with epithelial ovarian cancer in tertiary Korean medical centers. We conducted the study using case-matched analysis to obtain equal cohorts of patients with respect to age, FIGO stage, histopathologic type, and tumor grade to assess surgical outcomes and survival.
Results: Fifty-two patients (26 matched pairs) with epithelial ovarian cancer were selected to the study. There were no significant differences from two groups in terms of demographic and clinical characteristics. At a median follow-up of 69 months (range, 15-146 months), disease-free survival (P: 0.72) and overall survival (P: 0.53) were similar in both groups.
Conclusion: Laparoscopically-assisted staging surgery did not show the differences in overall survival and disease free survival compared to laparotomic staging surgery. Laparoscopically-assisted staging surgery can be offered a treatment modality for selected women with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer.
