세계화 = 역사적 정형성과 지속 가능성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

역사적으로 보면 두 차례의 본격적인 세계화가 있었는데 첫 번째 물결은 19세기 후반, 두 번째는 20세기 후반에 시작되었다고 하겠다. 그러나 제1차 세계화는 대공황을 거치면서 무너졌는데 그것은 세계화는 지속 가능하다는 인식을 흔들어 버렸다. 따라서 이것은 현재 진행 중인 세계화도 끝날 것인가 하는 의문을 던지고 있다. 이 질문에 답하기 위하여 본 연구는 포괄적인 접근으로서 역사적인 방법을 채택하였다. 이러한 방향에서 본 연구는 제1차 세계화의 추락 요인들을 다시 살펴보고, 현재의 여러 상황들을 분석하면서 후자는 전자와 어떻게 비교되며 향후 세계화의 진로에 어떠한 영향을 미칠 것인가를 검토하였다. 이와 같은 작업으로 도출된 하나의 결론은 지금의 세계화도 무너질 수 있는데 이것은 결국 세계 양대 강국인 미국과 중국 사이의 정치경제적인 역학관계에 달려 있다고 전망된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Historical reflections suggest that there have been at least two major waves of globalization, one beginning in the late nineteenth century and the other in the late twentieth century. The paper finds that its first wave had been ended by the Great Depression in the interwar period thereby discrediting our common belief that globalization was irreversible. This leads one to question whether its current wave will collapse as well. The question may be approached from a variety of angles but this paper is set to explore it primarily from an historical rather than economic, political or social standpoint. Evaluating a list of key factors attributed to the fall of its first wave and a number of recent developments in the world which clearly have significant implications for its current one, this work concludes that the latter depends largely on the future of the Sino-American relationship, the international political economy of the two global super powers just as the course of the former was determined in essence by the Anglo-German rivalry nearly a century ago.
