The religious policy of Japanese
imperialism and christianity under the
colonial conditions
Choi Kyoung-Sook
I have researched the religious policy of Japanese
imperialism which is in the same category of aggressing over
Chosen by Japan. Japan carried out its colonial policy with
the ideology of Shin to worship. Its religious policy was also
on the same line with the colonial policy.
After the Japanese annexation of Korea, Japanese
imperialism carried out indirect policy of regulation through
the direct control over religion and the rule of education in
order to magnify the policy of assimilation. In case of
christianity, however, Japanese imperialism didn't tighten
the control of Korea and hadn' t the direct regulation because
the jurisdiction of christianity in Chosen belonged to foreign
missionaries. Therefore, mission schools became a lot of
obstacles in the Japanese policy which wants to regulate
Korea completely. Moreover, the colonial government wished
to weaken the power of Korea church. In order to do so,
Japanese bore rule the religious rights from Korea church to
change into their own christianity. In the long run, however,
this policy did not come off so much.
