Korean Nujeong and Wonlim are assessed as major cultural assets, with their value being re-examined in the context of potential UNESCO World Heritage inscription, similar to the classical gardens of Suzhou, China, or Kyoto, Japan. This study aims to analyze the trends in Nu-jeong research from the mid-1980s to the present, categorized by theme and period, and propose future research directions. Initial research (1980s–1990s) focused on basic regional surveys, commencing detailed investigations into architectural characteristics (spatial composition, landscape treatment techniques) and literary functions (e.g., Nujeong poetry and literary circles). The 2000s marked a deepening of spatial recognition and attempts at multi-disciplinary approaches, expanding literary analysis beyond Chinese poetry to include Gasa and Sijo, confirming Nujeong as sites of socializing and Pungryu(artistic elegance). A significant trend in the 2010s was the increased interest in digital information management and DB construction of literary heritage related to Nujeong, aimed at maximizing accessibility for both the public and researchers. Furthermore, research focused on strategies for cultural content creation and regional branding. Since the 2020s, studies have emphasized future-oriented convergence and philosophical/modern reinterpretation, concentrating on establishing the Outstanding Universal Value(OUV) for World Heritage candidacy, alongside exploring applications like the Metaverse. Future research must focus on systematizing the core identity of the Korean traditional landscape using concepts such as Chagyeong (borrowed scenery), Pungryu, and the 'plan of no plan' to secure a foun- dation for World Heritage listing. Essential next steps include strengthening the digital humanities infrastructure and expanding interdisciplinary collaborative research to globalize the value of the Nujeongwonlim.
