다시 못 올 것에 대하여 : 노동자 구술증언 속의 ‘향수’ 또는 ‘과거의 낭만화’ = For the Irrevocable Past : Nostalgia or Romanticization of Past in Testimonies of Workers

국문 초록 (Abstract)

향수(nostalgia)는 모호하기로 악명높은 개념이지만, 최근 우리나라에서도 문화비평 분야 등을 중심으로 학술연구에 많이 활용되기 시작했다. 그러나 정작 향수의 이론에 대해서는 깊은 고찰이 없는 채, 이 개념과 이론을 적용한 연구들이 앞서 나가고 있는 상황이다. 따라서 이 글은 향수라는 사회적·문화적 현상에 대한 이론의 역사와 여러 갈래의 이론들을 살펴보고 쟁점들을 드러내고자 했다. 이러한 목적에서 이 연구는 향수의 대상 혹은 매체, 향수의 원인과 주체, 향수의 정치적 기능, 향수와 사회적 차이 등 여러 쟁점들을 검토하였다. 이와 더불어 이 연구는 노동자들의 구술 속에 나타나는 향수적 감정을 담은 이야기들을 구술 자체의 맥락과 사회적 맥락에서 분석하는 시도를 하였다. 노동자 구술 속의 향수적 이야기들은 자본주의 사회질서로부터의 상징적 탈출에 대한 꿈, 삶의 기반을 파괴한 국가와 자본에 대한 울분, 사라져버린 공동체에 대한 그리움, 자신의 젊은 날에 대한 향수 등 여러 가지 의미로 해석될 수 있었다. 이러한 다양성은 향수의 이론과 관련해서는 어떤 특정한 이론의 일방적 적용하는데 신중하여야 할 필요성을 보여주며, 다른 한편으로는 향수라는 이론과 개념을 통해 노동자 구술의 해석만이 아니라 노동사 연구의 폭을 넓힐 수 있음을 보여준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Though nostalgia is infamous for its’ conceptual ambiguity, it has been used widely in academic researches especially in contemporary culture criticism. However, the analysis on the various nostalgic phenomena(literature, movie, and advertisement) goes ahead without sincere review on the theories of nostalgia in Korea. Therefore, this paper reviews the history of the concept, and various theories of the nostalgia first. This paper reviews theories and arguments on the various issues of nostalgia: the objects or the media of nostalgia, the causes and the subjects of nostalgia, its’ political or ideological functions, and the effects of social differences on the nostalgia etc. This paper also tries to analyze the nostalgic stories in the oral testimonies of workers. Their stories can be interpreted in divers ways, for example, a dream for the symbolic exodus from the inhumane capitalist social order, a deep and raging indignation and bitterness against the state and capital that deprived them of the secure basement of living, a sorrow and yearning for the lost labor community, a nostalgia for the their youth etc. These diversity shows that we should be careful in using and appling the concept and theories of nostalgia. At the same time, it shows that we can enrich the interpretation of oral testimonies and expand the labor history into a new terrain with this concept and theories.
