Recreation and park opportunities are linked to the health and general well‐being of participants. Physical activity embodied
in recreation and sports is associated with better mental health and the prevention of many diseases (e.g., certain types of
cancer, heart disease, hypertension). With the current concern for health, obesity, and physical inactivity on a worldwide basis,
parks and recreation settings have important contributions to make. Factors such as outdoor recreation, community areas and
facilities, time use, constraints, and social interactions all contribute to how recreation can help to promote enjoyable and active
lifestyles. Research using the social ecological model focuses on how individuals are motivated to be more active because of
various social (interpersonal), community, environmental, and policy contexts. This paper overviews research underway
(primarily in North American) aimed to understand active leisure lifestyles through outdoor, sports, and community recreation
opportunities. The contributions that leisure researchers can make in addressing physical activity and health issues are also
      discussed.
