Due to recent climate change and environmental deterioration, much attention has been given to protect water quality and aqua-ecosystem. Nutrient balances of T-N and T-P in agriculture has recorded higher than the OECD average, and T-N balance reached 240mg/ha/kr which is three time higher than the OECD average. In particular, it has been known that most non-point source pollutants in agriculture occurred during the early stage of irrigation. Therefore, this study assessed the annual discharge of pollutants from paddy fields and developed the water management technique to reduce the pollutant loads. An automatic control of ponding depth enabled to minimize the amount of pollutant discharged from a paddy field and the intake sluice integrated with activated carbon developed in this study reduced the occurrences of T-N and T-P by 36% and 26%, respectively.
