절망 속에서 희망 찾기: 주거지원 남성출소자의 교도소 수감 및 출소에 대한 부인의 경험 = Search for Hope in Despair: Experiences of Ex-Offenders' Wives on Housing Services

This study explored what the ex-offenders' wives experienced regarding their husbands' imprisonment and release from prison. Twelve ex-offenders' wives who received housing support by the Korea Rehabilitation Agency were interviewed and their interview data were analyzed by the consensual qualitative research method. Despite being in shock over their husbands' imprisonment, they still took care of their husbands and children. The wives were vulnerable to financial difficulties regarding housing, living, children's educational expenses. Some children who knew about their fathers' imprisonment experienced inner turmoils, and others who did not know felt anxiety regarding their fathers' absence. The wives' strong commitment to family and children and positive outlook on their situations helped them to maintain their marriage and they got a part-time job to make a living before their husbands came back home. They evaluated themselves to endure painful situations well and felt relieved after their husbands were released from prison. However, they worried that their husbands might commit the same crime and that the children might take after their fathers in behaviors. The results were discussed in supporting the needs for ex-offenders' families resiliency based on ex-offenders and their wives' experiences.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 남편의 수감과 출소에 대해 부인은 어떤 경험을 하는지를 이해하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 한국법무보호복지공단으로부터 주거지원을 받는 출소자의 부인 12명을 심층면접 하였고, 면접 자료를 합의적 질적 분석 방법으로 분석하였다. 남편의 수감을 알게 된 부인들은 큰 충격을 받았지만, 충격 속에서도 남편과 자녀들을 보살폈다. 부인들은 자녀와 가족을 유지해야겠다는 신념, 수감된 남편에 대한 신뢰, 상황에 대한 긍정적인 해석으로 수감 상황을 수용하였다. 부인들은 생계를 책임지던 남편의 수감으로 인한 경제적인 어려움을 가장 많이 호소하였으며, 남편의 부재기간 동안 주거와 생활비의 감당을 힘들어 했으며, 자녀들의 교육문제를 힘들어 하였다. 자녀에게 아버지의 수감을 알렸을 때 자녀가 방황하는 경우도 있었고, 수감은 몰랐지만 아버지의 부재로 자녀가 불안해 한 경우도 있었다. 생활비와 자녀교육비 마련을 위해 부인들은 경제 활동을 시작하고, 바뀐 가정의 상황에 자녀들이 적응하도록 보살피면서 남편의 수감 기간을 버텨냈다. 남편의 출소로 경제적 상황이 나아졌고, 자신이 잘 버텨낸 것을 대견해 하면서도, 남편이 언제 또 문제 상황을 만들지 모른다는 불안감을 느끼고 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 남편의 교도소 수감 및 출소와 관련된 부인의 경험을 통해 얻은 출소자의 가족복원에 필요한 도움들을 중심으로 논의되었다.
