불교 세시풍속의 전승양상 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

조계사를 사례로 1년간의 세시풍속을 조사하여, 사찰에서 행하는 세시풍속의 전승양상을 살펴보았을 때 다음과 같은 시사점을 얻을 수 있다.
첫째, 歲時의 특성이 한 해의 시작ㆍ끝이나 사계절처럼 시간의 분절적 흐름을 중심으로 변화되고 있다는 점이다. 특히 불교 세시풍속은 입춘, 정초기도, 대보름, 삼재소멸기도 등과 같이 정초에 집중되어 있다. 정초는 새로운 해를 맞아 벽사기복하는 인간의 종교적 심성과 깊이 관련되어 있어, 이를 사찰의 세시에 적극 수용하고 있다.
둘째, 민간의 세시를 수용하는 경우, 명절이나 節氣가 지닌 의미와 풍습을 되살리려는 노력을 살필 수 있다는 점이다. 현재 많은 사찰에서는 명절ㆍ절기를 기도법회로만 수용하는 경향이 있어, 종교적 방식의 재충전이 바람직하게 이루어지고 있다고 보기 힘들다. 이에 조계사에서 사라져가는 명절과 절기의 의미를 되새기고 전통세시의 다양한 요소를 되살리고자 노력하는 있는 점은 주목할 만하다.
셋째, 현대인의 삶의 양식과 요구에 부응하여 새로운 시기에 주목하고, 새로운 풍속이 생겨하는 현상이 활발하다는 점이다. 그 가운데는 바람직한 내용도 많지만 우려되는 점도 있다. 이를테면 지나치게 대형화ㆍ장기화된 儀式과 방편적으로 치중된 사례들을 들 수 있다. 개인의 소원성취를 위해 기도를 시작하는 것이 당연하지만, 이러한 자기중심의 마음을 지혜와 자비의 信行으로 발전시키는 것이 불교기도의 본질이라는 점을 잊어서는 안 된다.
이 연구와 함께 세시풍속이 활발하게 전승되는 전국의 주요사찰에 대한 추가연구를 실시하고, 불교 세시풍속을 시대별ㆍ시기별로 파악하여 그 의미와 전승양상을 체계화하는 작업이 필요하다. 이를 통해 실제 불교 세시풍속의 바람직한 방향성을 제안하고 반영하는 데까지 나아가야 할 것이다.

A Research on Transmission Patterns of Buddhist Seasonal Customs
A case study of seasonal customs in Jogyesa Temple were studied for a year. The transmission patterns of seasonal customs carried out in the temple were examined and the following points were observed.
First, the characteristics of special seasons are based on changes in segmental characteristics of time such as the beginning or end of a year or the four seasons. Especially, Buddhist seasonal customs are focused on the beginning of January such as onset of spring, the beginning of January, the first full moon of the year, prayer to get rid of three disasters and others. The beginning of January is deeply related to human’s good natured religion with greeting the new year and getting rid of evil spirits and praying for fortune which are accepted wholeheartedly in seasonal customs in the temple.
Secondly, for cases accepting private seasonal customs, efforts can be seen to revive the significance and customs possessed in holidays and subdivisions of the seasons. Currently, numerous temples tend to accept holidays and seasonal customs as Buddhist ceremony services which makes it hard to accept that it is being carried out desirably as a recharge of religious methods.
