건설적·맹목적 국가자긍심과 이민자에 대한 태도 = South Koreans’ Constructive and Blind National Pride and Attitudes toward Immigrants

I examine how constructive and blind national pride are associated with attitudes toward immigrants among South Koreans. Using an original survey, I provide theoretically relevant measures for the two different types of national pride and conduct a factor analysis to examine empirical distinction between them. I then analyze how the two concepts are related to attitudes toward immigrants. My findings show that constructive national pride is positively associated with attitudes toward immigrants, whereas blind national pride is negatively associated. Yet, given that the latter is more strongly related than the former, it implies that South Koreans’ constructive national pride is limited in terms of the inclusion of immigrants.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국인들의 국가자긍심을 건설적 국가자긍심과 맹목적 국가자긍심으로 구분하여, 각각의 유형이 이민자에 대한 태도와 어떻게 연관되는지 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 통해 이 연구는 다음의 두 가지 기여를 제공한다. 첫째, 새로운 설문조사를 활용하여 두 유형의 국가자긍심을 적절히 측정할 수 있는 문항을 제시한 후, 요인분석을 통해 두 국가자긍심이 서로 다른 차원의 개념임을 보였다. 둘째, 두 가지 국가자긍심이 가지는 차별적인 특성을 토대로 각각이 이민자에 대한 태도와 어떠한 관계를 가지는지 분석했다. 본 연구의 경험적 발견은 이론적 기대와 같이 한국인들 사이에서도 건설적 국가자긍심이 이민자에 대한 태도와 긍정적인 상관관계를 가지는 반면, 맹목적 국가자긍심은 부정적인 관계를 가지는 것을 보여준다. 그러나 전자보다 후자의 영향력이 더욱 크다는 사실은 한국인들의 건설적 국가자긍심의 포용범위가 제한적일 수 있음을 시사한다.
