보조사의 기능과 정보구조 = On the Interrelation between the Functions of Auxiliary Noun Endings and the Information Structure in Korean

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the functions of Korean auxiliary noun endings in terms of information structure. In advance of the analysis, I classified three types of informational articulations of sentential utterances in Korean and then integrated them in one type of tripartite structure: TOPIC-(THEME)-FOCUS. The choice of the basic terms is ascribed to the research tradition of the uses of each term in Korean. In conjunction with the information structure, I argue that {neun} is a topic marker, which delimits the domain of the objects in discourse, {to} is a predicate thesis marker, which corresponds with verum focus and semantically presupposes the existence or the truth of another (sister) proposition, and {man} acts nearly the same with {to} except that it does not presuppose but excludes the truth of sister propositions.
