니케타스 코니아테스의 『연대기』 - 고중세 비잔티움의 역사서술법과 문화적 정체성 - = The Chronicle of Niketas Choniates: Writing History and Cultural Identity in Byzantium in the High Middle Ages

국문 초록 (Abstract)

니케타스 코니아테스(1155∼1217)는 고중세 비잔티움 세계를 대표하는 명망 높은 역사가이다. 이 연구는 이 역사가의 삶과 그의 대표적인 작품 속에 드러난 비잔티움의문화적 정체성에 대해 분석한다. 니케테스 코니아테스는 종교적인 순수성과 민족적인 특수성의 소실에서 비잔티움이 1204년에 몰락한 원인을 찾았다. 이러한 가치를 — 비록 비잔티움의 시야에서 볼 때 야만적인 형태였을지라도 — 더욱 완고하게 보존하고 있던 서방 라틴 가톨릭 세력이 미신에 몰두하고 근시안적인 행태만을 반복한 비잔티움을 상대로 승리했다는 것이다. 안타깝게도 코니아테스나 그의 저술과 관련된 연구는 국내에 존재하지 않으며, 그와 비슷하게 십자군 전쟁 과정을 직접 목격하고기록을 남긴 안나 콤네나의 『알렉시아스 』에 대한 간헐적인 연구만이 진행되었다. 그가 비잔티움 사학사와 4차 십자군 관련 연구에 기여한 바를 고려할 때 더 많은 학술적인 분석이 진행될 필요가 있다. 방대한 『연대기』의 내용을 모두 다루기보다, 이 글에서는 그의 생애와 역사적인 배경, 그가 요안니스 2세와 마누엘 1세의 치세를 대조하는 과정에서 묘사한 비잔티움의 문화적 정체성, 그리고 비잔티움의 시야에서 본 반서방주의와 1204년에 집중하여 분석하고자 한다. 이를 통해 고중세 비잔티움 세계의 역사서술 방식과 문화를 좀 더 면밀하게 조명할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Niketas Choniates (1155∼1217) is a historian who represents Byzantium’s intellectual and cultural height during the High Medieval Period. This study analyzes his life and Byzantium’s cultural identity embed throughout his most well-known work: the Chronicle (Χρονικὴ διήγησις). He finds Byzantium’s loss of religious purity and inhabited uniqueness as the cause of its fall in 1204. He argues that Byzantium, which at the time had cast away its traditional merits via practicing superstitious activities and being short-sighted, evidently lost to the Latin Catholic West that had still kept its old values (though may they seem barbarian in the Byzantine perspective). Unfortunately, no focused study has been completed on Choniates or his works in Korea. Due to the limited scope of this paper, this study focuses on analyzing the life and historical background of Niketas Choniates, his anecdote on Byzantium’s cultural identity reflected through his comparison between the reign of Ioannes II Komnenos and Manuel I, and the Byzantine perspective on the anti-West propaganda and the events surrounding 1204.
