The objective of this study is to prove the continuity of development of hospital forms in which, at the one hand, some characteristics which fail to satisfy newly emerged requirements stimulate the development of succeeding forms while, on the other hand, many characteristics survive the process of change by looking back at the history of hospital forms before the 20th century.
By displaying this continuity, it is aimed to identify systematically those factors which have to be considered in selecting the basic form of a hospital with a view to encouraging planners and designers of hospitals to inspect critically their own preoccupations and stimulating them to develop a new form of a hospital which may be the most suitable to our current situation.
