한국 유권자의 지역정체성과 지역주의 태도 = South Koreans’ Regional Identity and Regionalism

Though some previous studies utilize the social psychological approach to analyze regionalism in South Korea, they do not pay close attention to the cognitive aspect of social identity theory. Thus, in this study, we measure South Koreans’ regional identity based on both hometown and residence regions. Using the new measures, we examine whether the identities shape regionalist attitudes. Our findings show that, first, South Koreans have, on average, stronger residence-based identity rather than hometown-based one. Yet, the pattern is very heterogeneous depending on regions and, in particular, those living in Seoul have much stronger residence-based identity. Second, regionalist attitudes, which consist of in-group favoritism and out-group hostility, come primarily from hometown-based identity, not residence-based one. However, the effects of the two types of regional identities consistently appear more salient in Seoul, TK, and PK than in other regions. Third, as expected, the substantive effects of hometown identity on regionalist attitudes are stronger in Yeongnam and Honam than in other regions.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

선행연구들은 한국정치에서 오랫동안 지속된 지역주의를 분석하기 위해 사회심리적 관점에 입각하여 내집단과 외집단 지역을 구분했으나, 사회정체성 이론의 인지적 측면인 지역정체성에 대해서는 소홀했다. 본 연구는 한국 유권자들의 출신지와 거주지에 대한 지역정체성을 직접적으로 측정함으로써 지역주의 태도를 분석한다. 본 연구의 주요 발견에 따르면, 첫째, 한국 유권자들은 평균적으로 출신지보다 거주지 지역정체성을 강하게 가지지만, 지역에 따라 그 패턴이 크게 상이하며 특히 서울 지역의 거주지 정체성이 두드러진다. 둘째, 내집단 지역에 대한 애착과 외집단 지역에 대한 반감으로 표현되는 지역주의 태도는 거주지 정체성이 아닌 출신지 정체성에 근거하여 주로 발현된다. 그러나 서울, 대구ㆍ경북, 그리고 부산ㆍ울산ㆍ경남 지역에서는 일관되게 두 가지 정체성의 영향력이 모두 두드러진다. 셋째, 출신지 정체성의 실질적 영향력은 여타 지역에서보다 예상과 같이 영ㆍ호남 지역에서 더욱 크게 나타난다.
