This study aims to understand the process of precariatisation of platform workers through precarious employment and income, hazardous working conditions and limited social security. In order to do this, we interviewed six platform workers, including workers in the quick service and food delivery sectors. In-depth interviews were conducted to obtain data on their actual work practices, precarious employment and income in the process of precariatisation, hazardous working conditions and limited social security, which were analysed using the grounded theory method. The results of the analysis showed that ‘ICT development and simplification of work’, ‘influx of new delivery workers’, ‘intensification of competition’, ‘precarious income’: ‘Deteriorating economic life’, ‘Long working hours’, ‘Working conditions exposed to accidents and diseases’, ‘Practical dependency’, ‘Duality’, ‘Private insurance’, ‘Workers’ compensation insurance’, ‘Improving working conditions of food delivery platform workers’, ‘Choosing not to have workers’ compensation insurance’, and ‘Poverty phenomenon’ were identified and theorised according to the similarities and commonalities of their experiences based on their strategies to deal with the continuous decline in income and the occurrence of traffic accidents. The core conditions are “unstable income: deteriorating economic life”, “long working hours” and “working environment exposed to accidents and diseases”, and based on private insurance, we theorised the processes of “private insurance”, “workers’ compensation insurance”, “unionisation and collective bargaining”. In this regard, we summarised the consequences of various situations, such as the changing paradigm of the labour market, unstable income and working environment, the need and limitations of private insurance, and the limitations of workers’ compensation, and discussed the responses and limitations at each level.
