생물인류학적 관점에서 본 조선시대 검안시장의 학술적 가치와 가능성 = The Academic Value and Possibility of the Postmortem Investigation of Joseon Kingdom from the Perspective of Biological Anthropology

국문 초록 (Abstract)

조선시대의 검시(檢屍)는 동아시아에서 독자적으로 발전해 온 조사기법의 전통을 이어받아 이루어 진 것으로 그 당시 변사사건의 조사와 판결 내용에 대해 기술한 보고서가 현재도 다수 남아 있다. 여기에 포함되어 있는 당시 검시기록인 시장(屍帳)에는 조사 중 확인된 증거가 매우 객관적으로 기술되어 있기 때문에 일찍부터 법의학 연구자들의 관심을 받았다. 하지만 검안 기록에 대한 법의학적 분석을 위해서는 시장 기록을 정확히 읽어내는 인문학자와 검시기록을 이해할 수 있는 법의학자가 함께 연구를 수행해야 하며 이 과정을 통해서만 비로소 다른 역사 문헌에서 접하기 어려운 조선시대 사람의 다양한 사망원인에 대해 자세히 밝힐 수 있는 것이다. 검안시장 자료에는 사망 사건이 발생한 경위와 피해자가 입은 손상 등이 매우 객관적으로 자세하게 묘사되어 있어 당시 사람들이 어떤 질병이나 외상을 얻어 죽음에 이르게 되었는지 구체적으로 알 수 있으며 이러한 자료가 앞으로도 계속 축적되면 이는 고인골에 대한 생물인류학적 연구의 해석에 있어서도 매우 중요한 사전정보 로서의 의미를 갖게 될 수 있을 것이라 본다. 이 종설에서는 현재까지 밝혀진 조선시대 검안 서류와 시장의 내용에 대해 먼저 살펴보고 이 안에 다루어진 내용 중 생물인류학적으로 중요한 의미를 갖는 정보는 어떠한 것인지를 밝히며 이에 대한 연구는 향후 어떤 방식으로 이루어져야 할지에 대해 관련 학자들에게 제시하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The post-mortem examination of the Joseon Dynasty inherited the tradition of forensic techniques that had developed in East Asia. The Shijang, an examination record included in the report, received the forensic scientists’ attention early on because the evidences were described in very objective and rational ways. For the successful analysis of the examination records, however, humanities scholars and forensic scientists must collaborate, and only through it, the deaths of Joseon Koreans, which are difficult to encounter in other historical resources, can be revealed in detail. In the Joseon forensic records, as the incidents are very objectively described, the diseases or trauma people suffered at the time and the related cause of deaths could be successfully revealed. In this review, we introduce the contents of the Joseon Dynasty post-mortem examination records, and propose how the research would be conducted on them in order to make anthropological research on ancient human bones more fruitful in the future.
