The purposes of this study are (1) to provide a reliable picture of patterns of physical development of Korean boys and girls and (2) to determine developmental periods. Four kinds of measure; height, weight, chest circumference, and head circumference have been used for this purpose.
To summarize:
1. Developmental patterns of height and weight are similare in their general trends, but chest circumference is a bit dissimilar in the case of girls and boys. The growth of head circumference follows in general neural patterns as suggestedby Scammon.
2. All of the measure commonly show three or four steps of development, therefore they are supposed to have a few developmental cycles before maturity.
3. Ages of maturity are inferred to begin around 21 years of age for boy, and 19 years of age for girl respectively. Girls surpass boys between around 10~15 years of age.
4. Individual differences are in great variation after puberty through later adolescence but become uniform as the child attains to maturity.
5. Real differences of developmental patterens among city. Small city , and rural areas are slight but in general, city, small city, and rural areas are in that order in size and weight.
6. Five developmental periods are indicated according to the above measures and some sexual characteristics, as follows:
Infancy Birth~2 years of age
Pre-childhood 2~6 years of age
Childhood 6~11,13 years of age
Preadolescence (boys) 13~15 years of age
(girls) 11~13 years of age
Adolescence (boys) 14,15~21,22 years of age
(girls) 13,14~19,20 years of age
