丁茶山의 西學 關係에 對한 一考察 = (A) study on Dasan's Relation to Occidental Science(西學)

As for a case study of the relation between Practical Science(實學) and Occidental Science is the focal point, who achieved a synthesis of Practical Science and had a close point with Occidental Science.
In the study of this relation, it is the real state of things that there are many different views on whether Dasan believed in christianity or not, whether the message on his perversion was true or not, and his ideological relation to Occidental Science.
The confusions and uncertainties of such different views seem to come from, in the first place, insuffiency of the historical materials and reliance of the existing materials, and secondly it seems that the historical materials from the view point of different sides have been studied only from that of one side without bibliographical criticism.
In the study of practial science and the history of ohuroh, it is really necessary for us to study Dasan's relation to Occidental Science.
This paper intends to study Dasan's contact with Occidental Science examining comparatively documents of home and abroad - Chosunwangjo Silrok (朝鮮王朝實錄), Complete works of Dasan Cheong (丁茶山全書), Byeokuiphveon (闢衛篇) Dallet's Histoiro de I'Englise de Coree (朝鮮敎會史), and Whangsayeong Baekseo(黃嗣永帛書).
Owing to the limitation of such bibliographical study, the ideological approach is inevitable and Dasan's doctrine of the mean is to be surveyed, of which his views of divinity, human nature and ethics are partly examined and their ideological relations to Occidental Science are extracted.
The researched main points are as follows :
1. The time when Dasan had had a contact with Occidental Science scientifically is before the year of 1784.
2. The period from Dasan's contact with christianity to his formal entering church is up to 1795.
Therefore instead of the former theory that Dasan had had a contact with Occidental Science superficially for 9 years, it is believed that he had had a contact with it for 12 - 15 years.
3. Dasan's perversion is acknowledged in prinoiple, though there were many unsettled problems after Jamyeongso (自明疏).
4. As a result of surveying Dasan's doctrine of the mean, in the relation between Occidental Science and the formation of Dasan theory and the spirit of Practical Science, it is clear that the reformative spirit of Dasan and popularity, practicality, and revolution of Occidental Science had a great influence on Dasan's reformative thought.
And it is also clear that Occidental Science was the philosophical background of Dasan's practical ethies and of emulating with Jujahak (朱子學)
5. In accepting Occidental Science, Dasan was neither a simple dualist nor a unitary radicalist who would exclaim the spiritual revolution, but he had his own peculiar position.
6. It is not only Dasan alone but the young intellectuals of the school of Namin Sinseo (南人信西派), who made new interpretation on the sacred books(經典)
