This study was to identify the relations among independent self-construal, relational interdependent self-construal, and self-esteem and stability of self-esteem, depression, psychological well-being of 403 undergraduate university students. It was also to identify the role of self-esteem and stability of self-esteem as mediators between self-construal style and depression, between self-construal style and psychological well-being. They completed revised Independent Self-Construals Scale(ISCS), Relational Interdependent Self-Construal Scale(RISC), Self-Esteem Scale(SES), Stability of Self Scale(SSS), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(CES-D), Psychological Well-Being Scale(PWSB).
The results of the study are as follows. First, independent self-construal was positively correlated with self-esteem and stability of self-esteem, psychological well-being, and it was negatively correlated with depression. Relational interdependent self-construal was positively correlated with self-esteem, psychological well-being, and it was non significant with stability of self-esteem, depression. Secondly, level of self-esteem and stability of self-esteem difference was significant on depression, psychological well-being. Third, self-esteem and stability of self-esteem mediated relations between independent self-construal and depression, between independent self-construal and psychological well-being. Self-esteem mediated relations between interdependent self-construal and psychological well-being. The results of this study were discussed. And the limit of the present study and the suggestion for further research were noted.
