Bacteria can cause cutaneous diseases by direct invasion of tissues, toxin secretion, and by causing inmmunologic consequences. Dermatophytes can cause superficial infections by infecting keratinized tissues including the skin, hair, and nails. Fungus can also cause deep fungal infection including the subcutaneous tissue or even systemic mycoses. Viral infections can cause various cutaneous manifestations which are a prominent feature in many kinds of viral infection. There are several other causes of skin infection such as protozoa, scabies, and arthropods. In this session, we will review infectious diseases of the skin including bacterial diseases, tuberculosis, atypical mycobacterial infection, leprosy, dermatophytosis, deep fungal infection, viral diseases, protozoan infection, and sexually transmitted diseases.
