월천月川 조목趙穆의 퇴계 문하 입문과 도산서원 종향 = Wolcheon Jo Mok’s discipleship under Toegye and Ancestral Rite at Dosan Seowon

In the Joseon Dynasty, Dosan Seowon, a prominent Confucian academy, enshrined Yi Hwang (Toegye) and Jo Mok (Wolcheon). Jo Mok became Toegye’s student at the age of 15, learning academic principles while sometimes acting as Toegye’s scholarly assistant. Likewise, Toegye was not only a mentor in academics but also a life mentor who cared for Jo Mok’s conduct and well-being. In return, Jo Mok took the lead in memorializing Toegye, and as part of this effort, Dosan Seowon was established.
After Toegye’s death, Jo Mok, as the leading scholar in the Yean region, trained numerous disciples and significantly contributed to the spread of Toegye’s teachings. As a result, Jo Mok’s disciples initiated efforts to enshrine him at Dosan Seowon as a way to honor their teacher. However, during this process, the local aristocracy in Yean led the project independently, which drew criticism from the aristocratic factions in Yeongcheon (present-day Yeongju) and Andong. Nevertheless, the Yean aristocrats and Jo Mok’s disciples succeeded in their enshrinement efforts with the cooperative support of the ruling political power at the time. This success may have been influenced by the significant presence of the Wolcheon School within the administration and student body of Dosan Seowon.
Although there were criticisms due to the lack of consensus during the enshrinement process, these critiques were not directed at Jo Mok himself. Much like when Toegye had chosen Woo Tak as a model for future generations at the foundation of the Yeokdong Seowon in Yean, Jo Mok was widely regarded as a prominent scholar and the most notable of Toegye's disciples. His role as Toegye’s academic assistant also allowed his own scholarship to flourish. As a result, Jo Mok became the first of Toegye’s disciples to be enshrined at Dosan Seowon.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

조선시대 수首 서원이었던 도산서원은 퇴계 이황과 월천 조목을 제향하고 있다. 조목은 15세에 퇴계 문인이 되어 학문을 배우는 한편 때로는 퇴계의 학문적 조력자이기도 했다. 퇴계 역시 조목의 학문적 스승이자 제자의 처신과 안부를 생각해주는 인생의 스승이었다. 이에 조목은 퇴계의 추숭사업에 누구보다 앞장섰으며 그 일환으로 도산서원이 건립되었다.
퇴계 사후 조목은 예안 지역 가장 큰 학자로서 문인을 양성함과 동시에 퇴계학 확산에 많은 기여를 하였다. 이에 조목의 문인들은 스승에 대한 추숭작업의 일환으로 도산서원 종향을 추진하게 된다. 이 과정에서 예안 사족들이 단독으로 추진함에 영천榮川, 안동 사족들의 비판도 있었다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 예안 사족, 나아가 월천 문인들은 당시 집권세력의 우호적인 협조 아래 종향을 성사시켰다. 여기에는 당시 도산서원의 원장과 원생 구성에 있어서 월천학단의 비중이 높았던 것도 영향을 주었을 것이다.
종향 과정에서 공론을 모으지 않아 비판의 목소리도 있었지만 그것이 조목에 대한 비판은 아니었다. 퇴계가 역동서원 건립시 '예안에 우거하고 후학의 사표師表'로서 우탁을 선정했듯, 조목 역시 퇴계의 고제이자 후학의 사표로서 당대 학문적 위상이 널리 알려져 있었기 때문이다. 조목은 퇴계의 학문 발전에 조력자 역할을 하였고, 그 과정에서 자신의 학문도 더욱 발전해 나갔던 것이다. 그 결과 조목은 퇴계 문인 중 가장 먼저 스승을 모시는 도산서원에 종향될 수 있었다.
